SIMPLE THING #1) THE RIGHT MINDSET:It’s easy to assume that maintaining healthy habits on vacation is impossible, but this couldn't be further from the truth. If you have mastered some healthy basics such as prioritizing protein, staying active and getting quality sleep, you can pack your health habits along with you and feel great throughout your trip. Your long-awaited, well-planned vacation is the worst time to abandon what keeps you feeling your best. That doesn't mean you need to stress about every bite and can't enjoy local cuisine and treats on your trip. Nor does it mean you need to hit the gym everyday and follow a rigorous workout plan. However, approaching your trip with a plan to stay engaged with the basic elements of your HeathStyle will help you fully enjoy your adventure. SIMPLE THING #2) ON THE GO PROTEIN
Speaking of prioritizing protein, one of the best ways to keep your energy up and cravings down while traveling (and every other day) is to make protein a priority. While this can be more challenging when you're away from home, here are a few suggestions to help:
Road Trip: Pack portable protein in a cooler for your drive. Some great options include meat sticks, chicken packets, cheese crisps, hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt and individual cottage cheese containers. If you're stopping along your way for fast food choose locations that allow you to build your own bowl such as Chipotle or Flame Broiler. And don't forget about the grocery store! Dashing into the local market for a rotisserie chicken and some fruit is a great lunch option on the road.Â
Hotel Stay: Choose a room with a mini-fridge and stock it with protein options similar to those mentioned above. A shaker bottle and protein powder is a great way to supplement your protein intake while traveling. If your hotel offers a breakfast buffet, focus on protein for your first meal. Select eggs, bacon, yogurt, meats, and cheeses to help you feel satiated and energetic. Avoid muffins, pastries, and baked goods that will leave you feeling hungry and sluggish.
Eating Out: The same principles apply when dining out. Center your main meal around protein-rich options like chicken, shrimp, salmon, steak, or burger bowls, and add plenty of vegetables. Skip the rice, pasta, and starchy carbs unless they are the local specialty.Â
Walking Shoes: Always take your walking shoes on vacation! Walking is the best way to stay active while traveling. Stopping for a break during a road trip? Take a few laps around the parking lot to stretch your legs. Have a layover at the airport? Use that time for a brisk walk around the terminal. Bonus points if you carry your backpack with you...now you are rucking!Â
Resistance Bands: If you've been following me for a while, you know how much I love resistance bands. They're compact, versatile, and perfect for a quick workout anywhere. They come with instructions so you literally can't go wrong!Â
Jump Rope: A jump rope is a fantastic way to get your heart rate up in a short amount of time. Combine it with your resistance bands for an effective mini vacation workout.
